| http://acls.org/seguide.htm Southeast European Studies Programs * Dissertation Fellowships * Postdoctoral Fellowships * Conference Grants * Travel Grants * Language Grants to Individuals for Summer Study * Language Grants to Institutions for Summer Courses * Request for Proposals for Research on Heritage Speakers of Southeast European Languages The Southeast European Studies Program is funded by the Department of State under the Research and Training for Eastern Europe and the Independent States of the Former Soviet Union Act of 1983 as amended (Title VIII), whose purpose is the development of expertise in the United States needed for broad knowledge and analysis of developments in this critical world area. Every application for these fellowships and grants should, therefore, state clearly how the proposed research will contribute to a better understanding of the region and policy-making related to it. Applications should be for work on Southeast Europe: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia. Applicants may propose comparative work considering more than one country of Southeastern Europe or relating Southeast European societies to those of other parts of the world. Dissertation Fellowships in Southeast European Studies * Amount: up to $17,000 * Tenure: One year beginning between June 1 and September 1, 2007 * Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS Online Fellowship Application system (ofa.acls.org) no later than 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, November 15, 2006. * Decisions will be announced in mid-April 2007. Pending confirmation of funding, the American Council of Learned Societies will offer support for writing dissertations in Southeast European studies in all disciplines of the humanities and the social sciences. Applicants should choose one of three types of support: * Developmental Fellowships [NEW THIS YEAR] are for use at a location in the United States other than the home university in preparation for fieldwork or archival research in Southeastern Europe. Applicants may propose intensive language training, acquisition of methodological or other specialized skills, or preliminary work in archives located in the United States. * Research Fellowships [NEW THIS YEAR] for use in Southeastern Europe to conduct fieldwork or archival investigations. * Writing Fellowships for use in the United States, after all research is complete, to write the dissertation. Fellowships will be granted on the basis of the scholarly potential of the applicant, the quality and scholarly importance of the proposed work, and its importance to the development of scholarship on Southeastern Europe. Funds awarded may not be used in Western Europe. The stipend will be up to $17,000. As a condition of the award, the applicant's home university will be required (consistent with its policies and regulations) to provide or to waive normal academic year tuition payments or to provide alternative cost-sharing support. Developmental, Research, and Writing Fellowships are intended as sequenced support for completion of a dissertation. Recipients are therefore invited to apply the following year for the next level of funding. Eligibility Currently enrolled graduate students who will have completed all requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation by June 2007 may apply for one-year, non-renewable support to complete the dissertation. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Specification of Developmental, Research, or Writing Fellowships Applicants must apply for one of these three categories of support and in the application essay clearly state how much work on the dissertation has already been accomplished and in what specific ways progress would be advanced by an ACLS award. The selection committee will consider both the intrinsic intellectual merit of the project, the workplan proposed, and evidence of progress made toward completion. Application The application process is comprised of the following: (with the exception of the official transcript, all components must be submitted online.) * Completed application form * Proposal (no more than 5 pages, double spaced) * Bibliography (no more than 2 pages) * Publications list (no more than 2 pages) - optional * Three reference letters * Official transcript of graduate record To begin the Online Fellowships Application (OFA) process, please click on "APPLICANTS" at ofa.acls.org. Postdoctoral Fellowships in Southeast European Studies * Amount: up to $25,000 * Tenure: 6 to 12 consecutive months between July 1, 2007 and September 1, 2008. * Completed applications must be submitted through the ACLS Online Fellowship Application system (ofa.acls.org) no later than 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, November 15, 2006. * Decisions will be announced in mid-April 2007. Pending confirmation of funding, the American Council of Learned Societies will offer support for postdoctoral research and writing in Southeast European studies in all disciplines of the humanities and social sciences. In awarding these grants, primary considerations are the scholarly merit of the proposal, its importance to the development of the field, and the scholarly potential and accomplishments of the applicant. Priority will be given to applicants in the early part of their careers, that is, before tenure. All proposals should be for scholarly work, the product of which is to be disseminated in English. Funds awarded may not be used in Western Europe. Scholars may apply for fellowships of up to $25,000 for six to twelve consecutive months of full-time research and writing between July 1, 2007 and September 1, 2008. These fellowships are intended primarily as salary replacement to provide time free for research; the funds may be used to supplement sabbatical salaries, up to but not exceeding the Fellow's normal academic year salary. Eligibility 1. An applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States as of the application deadline date. 2. An applicant must hold a Ph.D. Degree conferred prior to the application deadline; however, an established scholar who can demonstrate the equivalent of the Ph.D. In publications and professional experience may also qualify. Specification of Research or Developmental Fellowships Support will be available for research on Southeastern Europe or for developing expertise on the area to add a comparative perspective to their work on another world region: * Research Fellowships are for scholars with area expertise in Southeastern Europe for six to twelve months of research and writing. * Developmental Fellowships [NEW THIS YEAR] are for scholars with primary area expertise in a region of the world outside Southeastern Europe for six to twelve months to acquire expertise in Southeastern Europe, including language skills, in order to add a SEE comparative perspective to their current or proposed research. Application The application process is comprised of the following (all to be submitted online): * Completed application form * Proposal (no more than 5 pages, double spaced) * Bibliography (no more than 2 pages) * Publications list (no more than 2 pages) * Two reference letters To begin the Online Fellowships Application (OFA) process, please click on "APPLICANTS" at ofa.acls.org. Conference Grants * Deadline: February 1, 2007 * Amount: up to $25,000 Grants up to $25,000 will be offered to support formal research conferences to be held before December 31, 2008, which intend to produce significant new research publishable in a conference volume. (Please note that no publication support is anticipated.) These grants aim to encourage collective efforts by groups of scholars who are prepared to work together on a focused set of issues. Accordingly, efforts should be made at the earliest possible stage to ensure that the eventual set of conference papers is intellectually coherent and not a loose collection of essays. Applications must specify a principal organizer who is affiliated with a university or research institution and must hold the Ph.D. Degree. For further information and application guidelines contact Olga Bukhina at obukhina@acls.org. Travel Grants * Deadline: February 1, 2007 * Amount: $1,000 - $2,500 Grants will be made to support travel for presentation of papers at scholarly conferences taking place before December 31, 2008 ($1,000 for travel within North America; $2,500 for intercontinental travel). The purpose of these grants is to build the Southeast European (SEE) field and to encourage comparative study that includes Southeast European studies. Topics of papers must be related to Southeastern Europe, but applications are welcome from SEE specialists proposing to attend conferences whose general theme lies outside Southeastern Europe as well as from scholars whose area expertise lies outside SEE who propose to attend an SEE-focused event. For further information and application guidelines contact Olga Bukhina at obukhina@acls.org. Language Grants to Individuals for Summer Study * Deadline: January 16, 2007 * Amount: up to $2,500 * Period: Summer 2007 Pending confirmation of funding, ACLS will offer grants of up to $2,500 each for intensive summer study of Albanian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, or Romanian. These awards are intended primarily for people who will use these languages in academic research or teaching. Applicants may request support for elementary, intermediate, or advanced language study, or for attendance at advanced-mastery language courses sponsored by ACLS. The application should specify the name of the institution they wish to attend, along with a statement of the significance of this training for their career plans. In most cases, proposals for beginning or intermediate level should be for attendance at intensive courses offered by institutions of higher education in the US, although, in exceptional cases, proposals for study in Southeast Europe will be considered. Proposals for study at the advanced level will ordinarily be for courses in Southeastern Europe. Proposals for advanced-mastery language courses will be for courses sponsored by ACLS at U.S. Institutions. These courses provide training in skills required for advanced fieldwork or archival research, or professional work in government agencies and non-governmental organizations. The skills may include, but are not limited to, translation, editing/copyediting, and advanced reading/sorting for relevance of specialized materials. (Further information about advanced-mastery courses and a list of the programs sponsored by ACLS, contact Olga Bukhina, Coordinator of International Programs, at obukhina@acls.org.) Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and must have completed, at minimum, a four-year college degree. Application materials for this program are provided in .pdf format; you will need the Adobe Acrobat Reader (available free of charge) if you do not already have it on your computer. To begin the application process, please print out the application packet for Southeast European Language Training Grants for Individuals . A paper copy of the application packet may also be requested from grants@acls.org or by writing to: Office of Fellowships and Grants American Council of Learned Societies 633 Third Avenue New York, NY 10017-6795 Language Grants to Institutions for Summer Courses Language Training * Deadline: January 16, 2007 * Amount: up to $10,000 * Period: Summer 2008 Pending confirmation of funding, ACLS will offer grants up to $10,000 each to institutions for support of intensive summer programs in Albanian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, or Romanian. Course instruction should be at the beginning or intermediate level, so designed that it covers the basic structures of the language in the summer equivalent of two full academic-year semesters. For detailed application guidelines, please contact Olga Bukhina, Coordinator of International Programs, at obukhina@acls.org. Advanced-Mastery Language Training * Deadline: January 16, 2007 * Amount: up to $10,000 * Period: Summer 2007 or Summer 2008 Pending confirmation of funding, ACLS will offer grants up to $10,000 each to institutions for the organization of intensive summer courses in professional skills needed for tasks such as reading in specialized disciplinary fields, translation of texts, interpretation of speech, copy-editing, and editing. Courses should be designed for those who have already attained a high level of language proficiency, either as native speakers, as heritage speakers, or as a result of instruction. (Note: To be eligible for ACLS advanced-mastery grants, a language course must presume advanced competence; language courses at the advanced level do not qualify.) Advanced-mastery language courses should be designed primarily for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers who have made a career commitment to Southeast European studies but may also accept individuals who work in non-governmental organizations or governmental agencies. Many graduate students, researchers, and other professionals who use a foreign language in their work often find themselves translating, interpreting, editing, etc., on a volunteer and untrained basis. Advanced mastery courses should train them in the technical skills they need to perform these tasks with greater professional competence. For detailed application guidelines, please contact Olga Bukhina, Coordinator of International Programs, at obukhina@acls.org. Request For Proposals for Research on Heritage Speakers of Southeast European Languages * Deadline: January 16, 2007 * Amount: $15,000 A grant of $15,000 will be made to an individual or collaborative team for a research project on heritage speakers in the United States that can report preliminary results by January 31, 2008 and be completed before December 31, 2008. The project should culminate in 1) an analytical paper and 2) a proposal for a model advanced-mastery course for SEE heritage speakers. There is no formal application form. For further information and application instructions, please contact Olga Bukhina, Coordinator of International Programs, at obukhina@acls.org . |
